WE ARE LOOKING TO RECRUIT TO:
Presiding Officers
6.15am start until approximately 10.45pmWe need experienced Presiding Officers to run polling stations across the city for the Police and Crime Commissioner and East Midlands Mayoral elections on Thursday 2 May 2024. To be considered, previous experience in this role is preferred, or you have been a Poll Clerk in Derby at least twice.
The Presiding Officer is responsible for managing polling station activities on the day. You will be responsible for making sure that Voter ID checks are completed correctly, briefing staff on their duties, setting up of the polling station, dealing with all enquiries and the accurate completion of all paperwork during the day and at the close of poll. There may be some lifting involved to help set up polling booths and make sure we have a suitable layout in place. You will only be able to take ‘on-site’ breaks during the day. Your role will be vital in supporting the Returning Officer and the Elections Team in delivering the local election processes and maintaining the integrity of the election.
Hours will be from 6.15am until close of poll. Following close of poll, you will be required to complete and bring all paperwork, the ballot box and equipment to Derby Arena, Pride Park, Derby DE24 8JB.
The fee payable will increase for 2024 to £368.63 before tax. This includes a 20% enhancement due to the combination of two polls, a £30 fee for successfully undertaking online training and a travel fee of £20. If you are appointed to a post and are employed by Derby City Council, you will be entitled to authorised absence from your normal role whilst you carry out your duties if your manager has approved your attendance.
All Presiding Officers will be required to undertake and successfully complete an online training course provided by the Association of Electoral Administrators. A link will be available to the training from late March. A briefing and ‘question and answer’ session will also be held via Microsoft Teams.
Appointments will be sent from the end of February. Poll Clerks
6.15am until just after close of poll, approximately 10.15pm
Previous experience is an advantage. However, previous experience in administrative work and the ability to provide excellent customer service is an absolute essential. Successful applicants will be allocated to a Polling Station within the city boundary. We may not be able to place you at your nearest polling station to your home or at your choice of polling station.Your role will include checking that relevant ID has been provided, accurately recording, and issuing ballot papers to electors and helping to set up the polling station. There may be some lifting involved to help set up polling booths and make sure we have a suitable layout in place. You will only be able to take ‘on-site’ breaks during the day as determined by the Presiding Officer for your Polling Station.
The rate of pay will be £242.89 before tax. This includes a 20% enhancement due to the combination of two polls and a £30 fee for successfully undertaking an online training course. If you are appointed to a post and are employed by Derby City Council, you will be entitled to authorised absence from your normal role whilst you carry out your duties if your manager has approved your attendance.

Verification/Count Assistants – Friday 3 May 2024
Previous experience is an advantage. You will be required to arrive at the count venue at Derby Arena, Pride Park between 8.30 am and 9.00 am. You will be required to take part in the verification of the number of votes found in ballot boxes and the count of local election votes. There will be a half hour unpaid on-site lunch break at a suitable point in the proceedings and you should expect to be available until 6pm. Please bring lunch with you. We will provide hot drinks and bottled water.
The rate of pay for the verification and count will be £102.96 before tax. If you are required to work beyond 6pm we’ll pay an additional £11.44 per hour. Staff will be required to sign in and out of the venue to enable us to pay you correctly.
If you are appointed to a post at the verification/count, and are employed by the Council, you will be entitled to take the day as authorised absence from your duty if your manager has approved your attendance.
Payment for election duties will be through Derby City Council’s Elections payroll system and paid into your nominated bank account on Thursday 30 May 2024. Superannuation regulations will not apply to these posts as they fall below the payment threshold set by Department for Work and Pensions.For each of the above roles, if you do any work on behalf of, are affiliated to, or subscribe to a political party, or work on behalf of any political party or candidate we cannot employ you on election duties.
