LOCAL / POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER (PCC) ELECTIONS
Local and PCC elections will take place on Thursday 6 May 2021.

Presiding Officers - to arrive at venue for 6am
We need experienced Presiding Officers to run polling stations across the city on 6 May 2021. To be considered, previous experience in this role is essential or you must have worked before as a Poll Clerk.. We are always keen to recruit new Presiding Officers. Contact electionstaffing@derby.gov.uk

You will be responsible for managing Polling Station activities on the day, maintaining the integrity of the poll, briefing staff on their duties, setting up of the polling station, maintaining a COVID safe environment, dealing with all enquiries and the accurate completion of all paperwork during the day and at the close of poll.
Your role will be vital in supporting the Police Area Returning Officer / Returning Officer and the Elections Team in safely delivering the election process and maintaining the integrity of the elections.
Hours will be from 6am until 10pm. Following close of poll Presiding Officers will be required to complete and bring all paperwork and ballot box/es to the Powerleague Derby, Derwent Parade, Pride Park, Derby. DE24 8BW to be checked in.
The combined PCC and Local Election fee is £246 before tax plus attendance at mandatory training / early venue visit fee of £40 and a travel fee of £15. The total fee payable is £301 before tax. There will be a requirement to visit the polling venue ahead of the election to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place.
If you are appointed to a post and are employed by Derby City Council, will be entitled to one day authorised absence whilst you carry out your duties on Thursday 6 May 2021.
You will be required to attend a briefing session, which is likely to be on–line, on a date to be confirmed in Mid-April 2021. Your appointment will be sent to you by email with a link to our MEA staff portal app. You will be able to accept your appointment, choose your training session and update your personal / bank information when you log on to the app.
Poll Clerks, to arrive for 6.15am until close of poll 10pm
Previous experience is an advantage. However, previous experience in administrative work and the ability to provide excellent customer service is an absolute essential. Successful applicants will be allocated to a Polling Station within the city boundary. Your role will include accurately recording and issuing ballot papers to electors and helping to make sure all activities operate in a COVID safe environment. There may be some lifting involved to help set up polling booths etc. to make sure we have a suitable layout for polling.
You will only be able to take ‘on-site’ breaks during the day as determined by the Presiding Officer for your Polling Station.
The rate of pay for acting as a Poll Clerk will be £158 before tax plus a payment of £30 for attending a mandatory briefing session, totalling £188 before tax.
Verification / Count Assistants – Thursday 6 May 2021
Previous experience is an advantage. You will be required to attend the count venue no later than 9.30pm at The Powerleague Derby, Derwent Parade, Pride Park, Derby. DE24 8BW. This is for the verification of the number of PCC votes found in ballot boxes and the verification and counting of Local Election votes. You will be required to attend for the duration of the count which could finish around 4.00am on Friday 7 May 2021. The rate of pay will be £90 before tax.
If you are appointed to a post at the verification / count and are employed by the Council, you will be entitled to one day authorised absence to be taken as soon as reasonably practical in consultation with your manager during w/c 10 May 2021.

Count Assistants – Friday 7 May 2021. We require Count Assistants to take part in the counting of votes for the PCC Election on Friday 7 May 2021. You need to arrive at The Powerleague Derby, Derwent Parade, Pride Park, Derby. DE24 8BW no later than 3.30pm for a 4pm start. The count could finish at around 11pm.
You will be required to attend a mandatory training session for this count process as it will operate under the Supplementary Vote system which is different from our traditional count methods. Training will ‘on-line’via Microsoft Teams. Training sessions will take place during mid-April. Further details will be contained in your appointment letter.

The rate of pay will be £90 before tax for the count and you will receive £30 before tax for attending the mandatory training session, totalling £120 before tax.
Postal Vote Opening Assistant
Wednesday 28 April to Wednesday 5 May 2021 inclusive, 10am -5.30pm; Thursday 6 May, 4pm until 1am Friday 7 May 2021.*
Derby City Council requires temporary administrative staff to receive and process postal votes. To be successful you will be a good communicator, work effectively as part of a small team and be able to concentrate for long periods of time. Previous experience of processing postal votes would be an advantage but is not essential.
The rate of pay will be £9.36 per hour. To be considered for this role you will need to be available on all dates stated above. Postal voting will take place in a Covid-19 secure location and in accordance with Covid-19 secure protocols.
*Guide working hours/days only. Working days and hours may be altered dependent on volume of postal votes received. Weekend and evening working may be required in the event of exceptional demand.

Payment for election duties will be through Derby City Council’s Elections payroll system and paid into your nominated bank account on Thursday 27 May 2021. Superannuation regulations will not apply to these posts as they fall below the payment threshold set by Department for Work and Pensions.
